Virtual Playground is a small, independent games studio based in Newcastle-upon- Tyne. I completed my 12-month work placement there during University, and returned to the company for five months after having finished my course.
Most of Virtual Playground’s output over the past few years has been in the form of “Tycoon” simulation games, although there have been some exceptions. They have also worked with various games consoles in the past, particularly the SNES and PlayStation.
The small size of this company has made it a great place to start out in the games industry. Although a lot of the work I’ve done there has been related to AI, I have had the opportunity to work in many other areas of development as well. I’ve also been involved in refactoring the engine the studio uses, and have been responsible for some of the core structural changes made over the course of my time there.
