Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction

Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction

After completing Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune last month, I decided to have a go with one of the titles I got bundled with my PS3. Insomniac GamesRatchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction was bright and fluffy and cute, so I whacked that in.

What an enjoyable adventure! I haven’t played a good old innocent platformer in a long time, and R&C: ToD brought me back to the days of yore, when that was my favourite genre. At the same time, it features a luscious, bright graphical style and a rich musical backdrop. I must say, graphically, the games that I’ve liked the look of best on the PS3 have been ones like this and Uncharted, both of which have gone for a very bright, very colourful, hyper-real feel. Those which have resisted the urge to fall in line with the HD B&B — “Brown & Bloom” — ethos.

It’s not perfect. In the end I dipped in and out of this game, playing it over quite a long period of time and playing other games in between. I think if I’d played it straight through, it would have seemed a bit tedious toward the end, but as an occasional pleasure it was very enjoyable. It’s also pretty linear, but I honestly don’t think this is a bad thing in a game. All in all, I really enjoyed it.
