Naughty Dog’s stunning Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune is actually the reason I bought the PlayStation 3 in the first place; in fact it was this post in particular, from the Double Fine website, which was the final decision-making factor — I actually went out immediately after reading it and bought a PS3 there and then. It is slightly perverse, therefore, that it took this long for me to get around to buying it.
Nevertheless, I have now bought it, and I must say I love it. Prettiness aside (and it is very pretty) Uncharted strikes, for me, the right balance between engaging storyline, interesting puzzles, and exciting action sequences. The storyline and the dialogue is cheesy, but brilliantly so — it’s cheesy in the way early 90s action films are cheesy, and in that it excels.
I hope that Uncharted marks a new step for Naughty Dog toward developing cinematic action / adventure titles alongside their platforming classics. I will certainly follow with interest any future titles they develop in that genre.
